Updating Software Improves Computer Security

Worrying about computer security has become a staple of modern life. Whether you make your living developing new technology or simply watch movies on Netflix, chances are that you worry about whether someone can unleash a virus or similar attack that will steal your information. Keeping your software updated could help reduce this risk.

Updated Software Prevents Clickjacking

Adobe offers a prime example of this. A few years ago, clickjackers discovered that they could turn on a computer’s microphone and video camera through a technique called UI redressing. As long as a potential victim clicked on a hijacked link, the hackers could take control of audio visual devices through the Adobe software.

Once Adobe realized what had happened, the company quickly developed a patch that prevented clickjackers from victimizing Internet users. If you didn’t download the update, though, then clickjackers could still manipulate your system.

Updating Operating Systems and Virus Protection Software

Your operating system has some security measures that can prevent known viruses from attacking your computer. For additional protection, most people also use anti-virus software.

Operating systems and virus protection software, can only detect viruses when they know how to identify them. Last year’s security software can’t necessarily recognize today’s virus as a virus. If you try to download a file that contains a Trojan virus, then an old security program could let it pass through without any questions. A recently updated program, however, will know how to spot the problem.

You won’t always feel like taking the time to update software. Doing so, however, helps keep you and your information safe, so you should always spend a few minutes installing suggested updates.
