Have your children reached the age where they want to choose their own clothes? Maybe your mornings are filled with arguments and discussions on what they’re going to wear, what they should wear and depending on their ages, what’s appropriate to wear.
Children sometimes as young as pre-kindergarten age decide they’re ready to choose their own clothes and put together their own fashion style. As a parent, it may be a style that you wouldn’t choose, but your child is perhaps seeking for their own style and a sense of independence.
How can you help them get started on their fashion journey?
1.) Always keep their clothes ready, washed and ironed (if necessary) so that they will always have a stockpile of ready clothes to choose from. This way, they can simply choose and put together an outfit on an as-needed basis.
2.) Let them review magazines and catalogs with you so they can see what is fashionable and trendy for their appropriate age group. Cut out pictures of clothes in magazines that they like and make a collage poster for them to look at.
3.) When they’re young, let them make their own matching and style choices, no matter what it looks like! Over time they will learn how to put it all together and make it look presentable.
4.) If they are a teenager, review with them the appropriate look for their clothes, whether they are a male or female. Girls and boys both need to understand exposing their bodies and wearing their clothes to cover their skin in an appropriate manner.
When they decide they’re ready to make their own clothing choices, they should absolutely be allowed to. Not only does it reinforce their self-confidence, but they also get a chance to learn early how to match colors, fabrics and styles.
